I am Nobody... or I am Nothing

I’m Nobody! Who are you?

Are you – Nobody – too?

Then there’s a pair of us!

Don’t tell! they’d advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!

How public – like a Frog –

To tell one’s name – the livelong June –

To an admiring Bog!

I've honestly never been big into poetry or found the point of reading poetry, however, recently, because we are learning about it in class I've tried to keep a more open mind. This is a poem I found online after researching the famous poet, Emily Dickinson.

Not only was I intrigued to research one of Emily Dickinson's famous poems because she is one of the most influential female American poets, but because although her work is simplistic and pretty straightforward, I have found there to be complexity within her poems.

This poem, for example, obviously talks about how it is actually more enjoyable to be a nobody rather than a somebody, and how quiet is preferred to fame. This got me thinking deeper about the meaning of this poem. Was this Dickinson's cry for help? Did she want out of the fame? Although she wasn't exactly a "celebrity", she was very known during the later 1800s.

This poem allows readers an insight on the negative side effects of being a "Somebody", or an important and well known person at some point in time. It allows us to infer that no matter the show a celebrity may put on, we never truly know what's going on in their personal life and I think that's the deeper meaning that Dickinson is trying to hint at here.

In simpler words, it is better to be kind to everyone rather than turn a cold shoulder because you never know the kind of battles people may be fighting. So here is my attempt at writing a similar poem...

I am a nothing! What are you?

Are you- Nothing- too?

Then that makes there two!

But say nothing! Or they will make us something- you know!

How miserable- to be- Something!

How popular- like a pet Dog

Say ones name- for the sake of their remembrance

Say it to all!
